Ekiti State Considers Extending Teachers’ Retirement Age to 65

The Ekiti State Government is contemplating a policy shift to extend the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years and increase the length of service from 35 to 40 years. This initiative aims to enhance the welfare of educators and bolster the state’s educational system.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji announced this proposal during a meeting with the newly elected leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ado-Ekiti. He emphasized the critical role teachers play in human capital development and reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving their welfare. The governor also highlighted plans to address outstanding gratuities and enhance allowances for science teachers. [1]

This move aligns Ekiti State with other Nigerian states that have adopted similar measures. For instance, Ebonyi State extended the retirement age for teachers to 65 years and the length of service to 40 years in March 2024. [2] Similarly, Imo State enacted legislation in November 2023 to implement the same changes. [3]
The proposed policy in Ekiti State is part of a broader strategy to retain experienced educators, ensure quality education, and recognize the invaluable contributions of teachers to societal development.
