EFCC Issues Stern Reaction After Nigerian Man Lists Agency’s Head Office as a ‘Hotel for Sale’ Online!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi (Journalist)| Sele Media Africa
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reacted to a bizarre online listing that saw a Nigerian man advertise the agency’s Abuja head office building as a “hotel available for sale.” The post, which went viral on the social media platform X, triggered wide public attention and a swift response from the anti‑graft agency.
According to the viral post shared by a netizen identified as @osere_x, the photo of the EFCC headquarters in Abuja was captioned as a hotel available for sale, misleadingly implying that the property was on the market.
Reacting to the online stunt, the EFCC issued a public statement reminding Nigerians that its corporate headquarters is not a commercial property and debunked the online listing as false and misleading. The agency cautioned members of the public against spreading misinformation, noting that tampering with or misrepresenting government property online could have legal consequences.
Officials from the EFCC further underlined that the commission remains focused on its mandate to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes in Nigeria and would not tolerate attempts to distort public perception of its operations.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the power of social media in shaping public narratives and the need for users to verify information before sharing or amplifying it.
Background on the EFCC
The EFCC is Nigeria’s foremost anti‑graft agency tasked with combating financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and corruption. The commission is currently chaired by Olanipekun Ola Olukoyede, who was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2023.
