Edo Promises Full Enforcement of Sanitation, Pollution Law By Enock Damidami | Sele Media Africa
Benin City, Edo — The Edo State Government has pledged full enforcement of the state’s sanitation and pollution regulations as part of renewed efforts to safeguard public health and the environment. [1] What the Government Says At a recent stakeholders’ meeting in the state capital, the Edo State Ministry of Environment and Sustainability (EDSME&S) reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring compliance with the Edo State Sanitation and Pollution Management Law. The ministry emphasised that the law will be strictly applied across the state to tackle environmental degradation, waste mismanagement, and pollution. [1] According to the ministry, enforcement will involve coordinated action by several agencies — including the Forestry Commission and the Waste Management Board — to carry out remediation, waste collection, and public awareness campaigns. Officials urged residents to embrace proper waste‑disposal habits, noting that environmental cleanliness should begin at the household level. [1]Recent Actions & Legal Backing The 2010 Edo Sanitation and Pollution Management Law grants the state government the authority to regulate waste disposal, prohibit dumping or burning of refuse in drains, waterways or public spaces, and to impose fines or seals on non‑compliant businesses and individuals. [2] In recent months, the government has demonstrated willingness to enforce sanitary regulations. For example, authorities in Egor Local Government Area arraigned 50 individuals before a mobile court for violating environmental sanitation laws — part of efforts to reinforce compliance at grassroots levels. [3] What It Means for Edo Residents – Cleaner cities and neighbourhoods — Enforcement of hygiene and waste‑disposal regulations is expected to reduce refuse dumps, improve drainage flow and limit environmental health risks. – Improved accountability — With the law actively enforced, households and businesses will be under pressure to comply with waste‑management rules. Defaulters risk legal sanctions under the law. – Public participation is key— Government officials emphasised that sustainable environmental improvement depends not just on enforcement, but on active citizen cooperation — from proper disposal to regular sanitation cleaning.
