Ebonyi Man’s Skin Darkens After 11-Day Trek from Lagos to Abakaliki to Thank Governor Nwifuru
After 11 grueling days on foot, 37-year-old businessman Jeremiah Obaji Nworu has become a symbol of resilience and gratitude. Embarking on a 633-kilometer journey from Ikorodu, Lagos State, to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nworu aims to personally thank Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his efforts in restoring peace to the conflict-ridden Effium/Ezza-Effium community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
Nworu, a native of Inikiri Umuezeoka, began his trek at exactly 12 noon on a Friday, cheered on by friends and business associates [1] . The journey, which has taken a toll on his physical appearance, including noticeable skin darkening due to prolonged exposure to the elements, is his personal expression of gratitude for the governor’s peace initiatives.
The Effium/Ezza-Effium crisis, which erupted in January 2021, resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of families. Governor Nwifuru’s administration has been lauded for proactive measures, including signing a peace accord into law, initiating land demarcation, and approving the creation of five autonomous communities—three for Effium indigenes and two for their Ezza counterparts [1] .
Despite facing challenges such as harsh weather conditions and physical exhaustion, Nworu remains steadfast in his mission. His journey underscores the profound impact of leadership and the lengths to which citizens will go to express appreciation.
As Nworu approaches his destination, his story continues to inspire many, highlighting the enduring human spirit and the importance of peace and reconciliation in communities.
