Ebonyi Killings: Authorities Uncover Shallow Graves Containing Mutilated Bodies!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
Ebonyi State security agencies have discovered shallow graves containing mutilated bodies in the troubled communities of Amasiri and Oso Edda, in Afikpo and Edda Local Government Areas of the state. The grim find comes amid intensified security operations following recent communal violence linked to a long-standing boundary dispute between the two neighbouring communities.
Security Deployment and Grave Discovery
Joint teams from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed to the affected communities to restore calm, protect lives, and uncover evidence of atrocities. During forensic exhumations, security operatives reportedly unearthed shallow graves containing mutilated bodies believed to be victims of the communal war.
According to military sources, the deployment follows recent attacks in the area, including the killing and beheading of several residents in Okporojo village, Oso Edda, which triggered heightened tensions and retaliatory violence.
Background of the Conflict
The clashes between the Amasiri and Oso Edda communities are rooted in a long-standing land boundary dispute spanning decades. On January 29, 2026, suspected assailants from Amasiri allegedly attacked Okporojo village, resulting in multiple deaths, beheadings, burning of homes, and destruction of property.
Security sources confirmed that several beheaded bodies were found during the violence, forcing government intervention. The gruesome nature of the violence prompted state and federal security agencies to intensify operations to prevent further bloodshed.
Government and Community Responses
In response to the violence, the Ebonyi State Government imposed strict security measures, including a curfew, temporary closure of schools, markets, and public spaces, and the dissolution of community leadership structures in Amasiri to curb escalation.
State authorities also sacked political appointees and traditional rulers from Amasiri and ordered security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice following the reported killings and mutilations.
Meanwhile, some Amasiri residents and clans have called for the withdrawal of military forces and an independent investigation into the killings, alleging excessive force and biased treatment in handling the crisis.
Ongoing Investigations
Security operatives continue intelligence-led patrols, cordon-and-search operations, and forensic analysis of burial sites as part of efforts to uncover the full scale of atrocities and identify culprits. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and support peace efforts while investigations continue.
