Duduzile Zuma‑Sambudla Denies Terrorism Charges as Trial Gets Underway

Duduzile Zuma‑Sambudla — daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma — has pleaded not guilty to charges of “incitement to commit terrorism” and public violence in connection with the July 2021 riots that left over 300 dead and caused billions of rands in damage. [1]
Her trial opened on Monday at the KwaZulu‑Natal High Court in Durban, marking a landmark case in which social media posts are central to terrorism allegations. Prosecutors say Zuma‑Sambudla used her online platforms to coordinate unrest via WhatsApp groups and inflammatory content. [2]
The riots erupted after her father’s imprisonment for contempt of court and were South Africa’s worst bout of civil unrest since apartheid. Zuma‑Sambudla, now a member of parliament with the newly formed uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, dismisses the charges as politically motivated. Her father and supporters were present in court, while her legal team argues her posts were reactive commentary, not incitement. The case is scheduled to run through November 21 and poses profound questions about free speech, social media regulation and selective justice in the country.
