DSS Alerts Kwara Police Commissioner on Imminent Terrorist Threats!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly issued an intelligence alert to the Kwara State Police Commissioner, warning of an imminent terrorist attack by the suspected Mamuda terrorists and related extremist groups operating in the region. This alert comes amid a significant surge in terror activity across Kwara State, particularly in remote communities such as Woro, Nuku, Kaiama, and surrounding areas. ¹
According to local sources, threat letters and actionable intelligence were delivered in advance to security authorities in Kwara, indicating that militants affiliated with extremist networks locally referred to as “Mamuda” were planning attacks on communities that refused to subscribe to their ideological demands. Villagers had reportedly handed over the threat documents to security agencies, including the DSS, prior to the brutal assaults. ¹
The intelligence warnings reportedly highlighted plans by the group to target soft and undefended communities in northern Kwara, particularly those near the Benin and Niger border regions, where militants have historically crossed into Nigeria from Sahel and West African theatres. Security assessments had earlier flagged a resurgence of militant group activity connected to larger jihadist networks expanding westward from Burkina Faso and Niger.
Background to the Alert
Recent terror activity in the region culminated in one of the deadliest massacres in Kwara State’s history. On 3–4 February 2026, militants attacked the villages of Woro and Nuku, killing between 162 and 170 residents many of whom were tied up and executed after refusing to embrace the extremists’ demands for ideological loyalty.
The brutal nature of the assault, which saw homes and properties razed and dozens of villagers abducted, has intensified scrutiny over the effectiveness of pre‑attack warnings and the coordination of intelligence with ground security forces. ¹
Security Situation in Kwara State
Kwara’s northern belt, especially communities bordering Niger Republic and Benin, has increasingly become a flashpoint for terror and armed group incursions. Analysts have noted that groups such as Islamist factions, including Boko Haram offshoots and IS‑linked militants like Lakurawa, have been influencing or coordinating with local terror cells in the area.
Security sources indicate that the DSS alert was aimed at prompting heightened vigilance, increased patrols, and stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security arms to forestall planned attacks. However, critics argue that despite warnings and threat reports, response delays and intelligence gaps may have contributed to the scale of recent violence.
Official Responses & Next Steps
State security authorities, including the Kwara State Police Command, have yet to make public statements confirming specifics of the DSS alert, citing the classified nature of joint security communications. Meanwhile, federal authorities have deployed additional troops to the region and intensified joint operations to dismantle terror networks.
Residents in affected communities continue to appeal for greater protection, immediate security reinforcements, and effective early-warning systems to avert further atrocities. ¹
