Doctors’ Strike Cripples Gombe Teaching Hospital, Patients Stranded!
Reported By Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
Patients at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, were left stranded on Saturday as the ongoing strike by members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) brought medical services to a halt.
The industrial action, which began earlier in the week, has affected outpatient services, surgeries, and emergency care, leaving many patients unattended and families scrambling for alternatives.
“My mother has been here since Thursday, but no doctor has seen her. We don’t know what to do,” said Aisha Danjuma, a caregiver.
Key Details:
- Striking doctors are demanding improved welfare, hazard allowances, and the immediate payment of salary arrears.
- Only consultants and a handful of senior medical staff are on duty, leading to severe delays and overcrowding.
- Hospital management has urged calm and says efforts are ongoing to engage with the striking doctors and relevant authorities.
Why It Matters:
- The strike exposes long-standing issues in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, including underfunding and poor working conditions.
- It puts lives at risk, especially in rural and underserved areas where alternative healthcare options are limited.
- Prolonged disruptions could lead to increased mortality and loss of public confidence in government health institutions.
