Defence College Curriculum Outdated, Needs Urgent Review — Commandant!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Commandant of Nigeria’s National Defence College (NDC), Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, has called for an immediate review of the college’s academic curriculum, describing it as outdated and ill-suited to contemporary security realities.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement session in Abuja, Olotu stressed the need to align military education with modern warfare trends, national defence priorities, and global security dynamics.
“Our curriculum must reflect current geopolitical shifts, emerging threats like cyber warfare, and inter-agency cooperation. We cannot keep using a model shaped decades ago,” he said.
Key Points:
- The commandant emphasised incorporating new modules on cybersecurity, asymmetric warfare, climate-related conflict, and hybrid threats.
- He urged collaboration between the military, academia, and policy think tanks to restructure training programmes.
- Stakeholders welcomed the proposal, noting the importance of updating doctrine and leadership training.
Why It Matters:
- Nigeria faces evolving internal and external security challenges — from terrorism to digital threats.
- A modern defence curriculum strengthens strategic thinking and operational effectiveness.
- Aligning training with today’s realities ensures better leadership preparation for senior officers.
What to Watch:
- NDC’s proposed reforms and pilot curriculum drafts.
- Input from defence partners and international military institutions.
- Policy actions from the Ministry of Defence or National Assembly on military education.
