Customs Targets 48-Hour Cargo Clearance with New One-Stop-Shop Initiative
Lagos, Nigeria – September 29, 2025 The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a bold One-Stop-Shop initiative aimed at reducing cargo clearance time to 48 hours, down from the current average of 21 days — a move expected to significantly ease port congestion and boost trade efficiency. The initiative was officially unveiled on Sunday by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, during a stakeholders’ engagement in Lagos. “This initiative is a game-changer for Nigeria’s maritime sector. It brings together all relevant agencies in one location to streamline documentation, inspection, and duty payments,” Adeniyi said.
The One-Stop-Shop will house representatives from key agencies including the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), NAFDAC, NDLEA, SON, and terminal operators, all working collaboratively to eliminate delays and bureaucratic bottlenecks. The NCS also announced it will deploy advanced digital tools to enable real-time processing, document uploads, and remote approvals. (Source: BusinessDay, Vanguard).
Analysts say the reform aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement and could improve the country’s ranking in global logistics and ease of doing business. “Faster cargo clearance reduces costs for importers and ultimately benefits consumers,” noted maritime expert, Dr. Emeka Obiora.
Sele Media Africa will continue tracking the rollout of the One-Stop-Shop and its impact on Nigeria’s trade ecosystem.
