Customs Intercept 108,775 Litres of PMS in Adamawa, Foils Smuggling to Cameroon!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a total of 108,775 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in Adamawa State, thwarting a major smuggling operation aimed at illegally exporting the fuel to neighbouring Cameroon.
The seizure was made by operatives of the Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, who acted on credible intelligence and surveillance operations across key border corridors.
“This volume of PMS, if smuggled successfully, would have dealt a heavy blow to our economy and created artificial scarcity locally,” said the Customs Area Controller, Salisu Abdullahi.
Key Details:
- The intercepted petrol was concealed in drums and jerry cans and stored in remote border communities awaiting illegal trans-border movement.
- No suspects have been confirmed in custody, but investigations are ongoing.
- The seizure aligns with the Federal Government’s clampdown on fuel diversion and subsidy fraud.
Why It Matters:
- Smuggling of PMS contributes to fuel scarcity, revenue loss, and sabotage of national energy security.
- With the deregulation of the fuel market, smuggled products now pose even greater pricing and availability challenges.
- Adamawa remains a key transit point for illegal fuel trade into Central African countries.
What to Watch:
- Prosecution of culprits if apprehended.
- Strengthened border surveillance and use of technology to track fuel movement.
- Possible policy adjustments by NCS and NNPC to curb cross-border leakages.
