The Cross River State Ministry of Education has shut down 36 unapproved schools across three local government areas — Calabar Municipal, Ikom and Ogoja — as part of a sweeping effort to sanitize the state’s education sector. [1]
According to an official release on October 20, 2025, the schools were found operating without valid “Authority to Operate” licences and, in several cases, conducted lessons in unsafe or residential premises. [2]
The breakdown of closures: 16 schools in the Calabar zone, 10 in Ikom and 10 in Ogoja. [1]
Commissioner for Education, Senator Prof. Stephen Odey, reminded parents to verify the registration status of schools and affirmed that the enforcement drive will extend to all 18 local government areas of the state. [1]
This latest action underscores the state government’s resolve to elevate educational standards and curb proliferation of operation‑without‑approval institutions.
