Court Fixes Friday for Nnamdi Kanu to Open Defence to FG’s Terrorism Charge!
Reported by Amos Dachung | Sele Media Africa Reporter
The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled Friday for the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to formally open his defence in the seven‑count terrorism and treasonable felony charge brought by the Federal Government. [1]
Justice James Omotosho made the ruling following the withdrawal of Kanu’s former legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Kanu Agabi, after Kanu apparently opted to represent himself. [1]
In his first submission as his own counsel, Kanu challenged the court’s jurisdiction to hear the matter — an objection that the court overruled. Justice Omotosho directed Kanu to proceed with his defence and adjourned to Friday to facilitate his preparation. [1]
The Federal Government had earlier closed its case after calling five witnesses, declaring it had met the prima facie threshold to warrant Kanu’s defence. [2]
As he prepares to open his defence, Kanu has submitted a motion seeking to call over 20 high‑profile persons as witnesses — including governors, ministers, and security chiefs — to testify on his behalf.
The court’s decision marks a pivotal moment in one of Nigeria’s most closely watched trials, with significant implications for national security, justice, and regional tensions.
