Court Adjourns Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Cybercrime Trial to October 20
Abuja, Nigeria — September 23, 2025 The trial of suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, over alleged cybercrime offences has been adjourned to October 20, 2025, following a preliminary objection raised by her legal team at the Federal High Court, Abuja. Presiding Judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, deferred the commencement of trial after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lead counsel, Ehiogie West-Idahosa, SAN, challenged the competence of the charges filed by the Federal Government. West-Idahosa submitted that the charges were fundamentally defective, arguing that the prosecution failed to comply with statutory requirements of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015. He urged the court to dismiss or strike out the case, stating that the alleged offences lacked clarity and sufficient legal grounding. The prosecution, led by counsel from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), requested time to respond formally to the objection.
Background of the Case
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a prominent opposition figure from Kogi State, is facing a three-count charge related to alleged dissemination of false information via digital platforms, a violation of Nigeria’s cybercrime laws. The charges are believed to stem from political statements made online during the 2023–2024 election period. Critics have described the case as politically motivated, though federal authorities deny this claim. Justice Ekwo ordered both parties to file and exchange written addresses before the next hearing. The court will rule on the objection before deciding whether to proceed to trial. Should the objection be upheld, the case may be struck out without going to trial. If dismissed, the trial will commence immediately after.
