Ibadan, Oyo State — The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in a joint operation with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has raided multiple bookshops in Ibadan over allegations of selling pirated books. Several suspects have been arrested, and outlets sealed as part of renewed efforts to curb piracy ahead of the school season. [1]
Key Details
- The operation, carried out on Saturday, was led by the Oyo State Coordinator of the NCC, Mrs. Oluropo Oke. Bookshops raided include Genesis, God’s Grace, Idera, Ireti‑Olu, Oluseyi, and Blessings in Beere, Oritamerin, Dugbe, Gbagi, and Agbeni areas. [1]
- Seizures include pirated works — many of the shops lacked proper records, receipts, or supplier documentation, which raised red flags for NCC officials. [1]
- Mrs. Oke explained that the enforcement is part of NCC’s mandate to stop piracy, especially during school seasons when demand for books surges. The Director‑General of the NCC, Dr. John Asein, has reiterated his administration’s zero‑tolerance stance on piracy. [1]
- – Shop owners have been warned that refusing compliance or obstructing enforcement officers will lead to prosecution under the Copyright Act. [1]
Implications
This crackdown comes at a critical time as many students prepare for the upcoming academic term and may be tempted to buy cheaper pirated copies of textbooks. The NCC aims to protect intellectual property rights, safeguard the interests of authors, and ensure the circulation of quality, legitimate educational materials.
