Lagos — Nigerians may be breathing a short sigh of relief as the price of cooking gas (LPG) reportedly dropped by 21.42% month-on-month, reaching an average of ₦16,195.07 for a 12.5 kg cylinder in August 2025, according to data shared by Vanguard summarizing NBS figures. [1]

The decline comes after sustained price pressure in recent months. In July 2025, for instance, NBS data showed the cost of refilling a 12.5 kg cylinder was ₦20,609.48, though that figure had itself represented a slight 1.91% dip from the previous month. [2]

What the Drop Means & Challenges Ahead

  • The reduction brings welcome relief to households already squeezed by inflation and high living costs.
  • However, some market watchers warn that the decline may be temporary rather than systemic—and could be reversed without stronger policy or supply stability in the LPG sector.
  • Key factors that could influence future pricing include foreign exchange rates, import costs (Nigeria still depends partly on imported LPG), transport and distribution challenges, and regulatory or subsidy interventions.
