Catholic Priest Rev. Fr. Paul Tanko Buried After Brutal Killing by Suspected Armed Herdsmen in Taraba!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Catholic community in Nigeria was thrown into deep mourning following the burial of Rev. Fr. Paul Tanko, who was reportedly burned alive by suspected Fulani armed herdsmen in Taraba State.
Fr. Tanko was said to be on his way to attend a peace talk meeting between the Tiv and Jukun ethnic groups when he was ambushed and brutally killed near the Takum Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses report that the attackers set his vehicle ablaze, leaving his body badly charred.
The priest was described by colleagues and parishioners as a man of peace and humility, committed to inter-ethnic harmony and Christian service. His killing has been widely condemned by religious leaders, human rights activists, and concerned citizens.
During the burial Mass held at Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral in Jalingo, the Bishop of the Diocese emphasized that “Fr. Tanko died a martyr, serving the Church and humanity with devotion.”
Nigerians have since taken to social media to mourn the priest and call for justice, with many demanding increased protection for clergy and communities in conflict-prone regions.
This tragic incident is part of a broader pattern of violence targeting clergy and rural communities in the Middle Belt region, often linked to ongoing farmer-herder clashes, ethnic tension, and insecurity.
