A Nigerian Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. John Chinenye Oluoma, popularly known as Fada Oluoma, has become a trending topic after sharing an unexpected encounter on his official Facebook page. On Sunday, September 7, 2025, after visiting a disabled parishioner, he stopped to join a group of young men drinking beer on a village road.
According to a report by Legit.ng, Fada Oluoma recounted that the young men respectfully cleared the road for him as he passed. Touched by their gesture, he returned to greet them, introduced himself, and requested a bottle of stout. He used the opportunity to engage them in a brief conversation about the importance of attending church services and the need for moderation in alcohol consumption.
“I told them medically alcohol is a poison and I hope they will move from moderation to quitting,” he said. He emphasized that he did not threaten them with hellfire but chose a more compassionate approach, believing that the Holy Spirit would continue the work he had started.
The priest’s actions have sparked diverse reactions online. Some praised his unconventional method of outreach, citing his alignment with the Apostle Paul’s approach of becoming “all things to all people” (1 Corinthians 9:22). Others expressed concern over a priest consuming alcohol, even in moderation.
Fada Oluoma is known for his relatable and sometimes unconventional approach to ministry. His recent actions have once again highlighted the balance between spiritual leadership and real-life social engagement.
