Building Collapses in Abia: Section of Structure Crumbles in Umuahia
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
A portion of a building along Library Avenue, Umuahia — the capital of Abia State — has collapsed, causing alarm among residents and passersby.
Early reports indicate that the affected structure is part of an older edifice, though it is unclear whether it was under construction, undergoing repairs, or simply deteriorating. As of now, there is no confirmation of casualties or injuries.
The incident has triggered swift action from local authorities. The Abia State Government sealed off the area and deployed the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) to supervise an integrity assessment of the remaining structure. The site is being evacuated to prevent further damage or harm.
Meanwhile, the site engineer connected to the building has reportedly been apprehended to assist with the investigation. The state also plans to subject all buildings of two stories and above to mandatory integrity tests to curb future structural failures.
Officials are yet to confirm the cause of the collapse. However, preliminary observations and expert opinion suggest potential use of substandard materials, lack of proper supervision, and failure to adhere to approved building codes. [2]
Residents are urged to avoid the area until it is declared safe. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
