BREAKING: Wike-Led PDP Faction Issues Six-Point Ultimatum Ahead of National Convention

In a significant development within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike convened an emergency meeting with party stakeholders on Monday night, September 1, 2025. The gathering, held at Wike’s Abuja residence, brought together prominent figures including former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti), and PDP National Secretary Senator Sam Anyanwu [1] .

The faction, identifying themselves as “Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders,” issued a six-point demand to the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), warning that failure to address these issues would render the upcoming national convention invalid. The demands are as follows:

  1. Conduct fresh congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States in strict compliance with existing court judgments.
  2. Urgently hold a new South East Zonal Congress to ensure fair representation.
  3. Respect the outcome of the South South Congress in Calabar, which has been upheld by the courts.
  4. Conduct Ekiti Local Government Area congresses in accordance with judicial pronouncements.
  5. 5. Avoid micro-zoning of offices beyond the general zoning formula adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to maintain peace and stability.
  6. Ensure that the national chairmanship position remains in the North Central, consistent with the zoning arrangement of the 2021 convention [2] .

The communiqué emphasized that the PDP stands at a “defining crossroads,” cautioning that attempts to sideline members or ignore court rulings would deepen divisions. “Unity cannot be built on disenfranchisement, exclusion, or the neglect of valid judicial pronouncements,” it stated, adding that only transparency and fairness would guarantee a credible convention [1] .

In response, the South East Zonal Executive Committee of the PDP condemned Wike’s demands, describing them as “reckless and baseless.” The committee asserted that Wike lacks the legitimacy to interfere in the zone’s affairs and warned him to steer clear of the South East PDP matters [3] .

As the PDP prepares for its national convention, scheduled for November 15-16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, these internal disputes pose significant challenges to the party’s unity and cohesion. Observers will be watching closely to see how the PDP navigates these demands and whether it can maintain stability ahead of the convention.
