BREAKING: Ruth Elton, Nigeria’s Oldest Missionary, Passes Away at 91
Sele Media Africa reports with deep sadness the passing of Mama Ruth Elton, widely regarded as Nigeria’s oldest missionary, who died on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the age of 91. She passed away at her residence in the Sharon Compound, Alafia Bamin Quarters, Ilesa, Osun State [1] .
A Legacy of Faith and Dedication
Born Ruth Hannah Elton on September 7, 1933, in the United Kingdom, she relocated to Nigeria with her parents in 1937. Her father, Sydney Granville “Pa” Elton, was a pioneering figure in the Pentecostal movement in Nigeria, having been posted as an Area Superintendent of The Apostolic Church of Nigeria under Joseph Ayo Babalola [2] .
Raised in Nigeria, Ruth embraced the country as her own. In the 1970s, she made the significant decision to renounce her British citizenship to become a Nigerian citizen, a rare and commendable act during a time when dual citizenship was not permitted [1] .
Missionary Work Across Nigeria
Ruth dedicated her life to missionary work, serving in various regions including Egbe, Okene, Koton Karfe, and other parts of Kogi, Ondo, Oyo, and Osun States. She was instrumental in spreading the Gospel and establishing Christian communities in these areas [2] .
Beyond evangelism, Ruth focused on addressing public health issues. In Okene, she played a pivotal role in reducing infant mortality by promoting better childcare practices and hygiene, combating harmful traditions like force-feeding, and raising awareness about infant health [1] .
Personal Life and Contributions
Ruth remained unmarried throughout her life, dedicating herself entirely to her missionary work. She was fluent in English, Yoruba, and Ebira, enabling her to communicate effectively with diverse communities [2] .
In addition to her missionary endeavors, Ruth authored three Christian books:
- The Gospel of the Kingdom
- Your Citizenship: Hell or the Kingdom?
- The Kingdom Has Come
These works reflect her deep theological insights and commitment to spreading Christian teachings.
Tributes and Legacy
Ruth’s passing has elicited heartfelt tributes from various quarters. Her contributions to Christianity in Nigeria have left an indelible mark, and her legacy continues to inspire many.
As we mourn her loss, we celebrate her life—a life dedicated to faith, service, and the betterment of others. May her soul rest in peace.
