BREAKING NEWS: Tanzania launches direct flights to Lagos, Nigeria!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
Tanzania’s national carrier, Air Tanzania (ATCL), has officially commenced direct flight services between Dar es Salaam and Lagos, marking a major milestone in strengthening ties between Nigeria and Tanzania.
Key Details
The route operates three times weekly:
From Dar es Salaam to Lagos on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
Return flights from Lagos to Dar es Salaam on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
The launch event held in Lagos was attended by top aviation and government officials from both countries.
Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary, Prof. Godius Kahyarara, emphasized that the route is part of efforts to enhance continental connectivity, trade, tourism, and people‐to‐people ties.
The Nigerian government has committed to visa reforms to ease travel for Nigerians visiting Tanzania, which is expected to streamline tourist and business travel.
In regulatory developments preceding the launch:
Air Tanzania was granted the Foreign Carrier Operation Permit (FCOP) by the Nigerian government.
The airline also obtained necessary approvals including the Document of Authorization, Conditions and Limitations (DACL) and Local Security Operation Procedures (LSOP) from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
Local ground handling in Lagos will be handled by Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc.
Significance
This new link strengthens diplomatic, trade, and cultural relations between two of Africa’s economies.
It reduces travel time and removes indirect routing (via third countries), which is advantageous for both tourists and business travelers.
It can potentially spur cargo trade: Tanzanian exports like coffee and Nigerian goods such as yams are now more easily transportable.
What’s Next
Implementation of the promised visa reforms by the Tanzanian government to make travel processes smoother for Nigerians.
Monitoring how this route impacts trade volumes and tourism flows between Nigeria and Tanzania in the coming months.
