BREAKING: CAS Orders Dani Alves to Pay 2.2M to Pumas UNAM Over Contract Dispute
Mexico City, Mexico — September 27, 2025 Mexican football club Pumas UNAM has officially announced a legal victory at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in their long-running contractual dispute with Brazilian footballer Dani Alves. According to a club statement released Friday, the CAS has ruled that Dani Alves must pay approximately 2.2 million in damages to Pumas UNAM, citing “reputational harm” caused by the rape allegations that led to the early termination of his contract in 2023. In March 2025, Dani Alves was acquitted by a Spanish court following a high-profile legal battle over sexual assault allegations stemming from an incident in Barcelona in 2022. However, the CAS emphasized that the contract termination was based on reputational clauses, not on the legal outcome. According to the ruling, Pumas was contractually entitled to cut ties with Alves when the case became public due to morality clauses typical in high-profile sports contracts. “Even though Mr. Alves was found not guilty, the damage to the club’s image and public trust had already occurred,” the ruling stated. Pumas UNAM, who terminated Alves’ contract in January 2023, hailed the decision as “a victory for institutional integrity.” The club said the funds would be reinvested into youth development and women’s football programs. As of press time, Dani Alves’ legal team has not issued a statement regarding the ruling. It is unclear whether they plan to pursue further legal action or comply with the payment.
