Borgu Under Siege: Dozens Feared Dead After Gunmen Rampage for Hours in Niger State Communities!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi (Journalist) | Sele Media Africa
Fresh details have emerged of a devastating overnight assault on multiple communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, where heavily armed attackers reportedly operated for hours without immediate military intervention, leaving dozens feared dead and many others missing.
Coordinated Night Raids Leave Trail of Destruction
Residents and security sources say the assailants stormed several villages including Tunga-Makeri, Konkoso and Pissa in coordinated raids, shooting indiscriminately, torching homes and abducting residents.
According to local accounts cited by international media, at least 32 people were killed in the attacks, though community leaders warn the true toll could rise as search efforts continue.
Witnesses described the assault as prolonged and highly organized, with gunmen reportedly moving from one settlement to another late into the night.
“No Security Presence” Residents Raise Alarm
Survivors say the attackers operated for hours with little resistance, fueling anger and fear among residents.
A community member from Konkoso told reporters that security forces were absent during the raid, a claim that has intensified scrutiny of response times in vulnerable rural corridors.
Local sources further indicated that homes and shops were burned and several residents abducted as the attackers swept through the area.
Police Confirm Casualties, Probe Underway
Authorities have acknowledged the violence. Niger State Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed fatalities in at least one of the affected communities, while security agencies say investigations and search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing.
However, officials have yet to provide a comprehensive casualty figure, and the identity of the attackers remains under investigation, though suspicion has fallen on insurgent or bandit groups operating around the Kainji Lake forest belt.
Growing Pattern of Violence in North-Central Nigeria
The Borgu assault comes amid a troubling expansion of militant and bandit activity beyond Nigeria’s traditional northeast conflict zone.
Analysts warn that porous forest corridors straddling Niger, Kwara and Kebbi states have increasingly become safe havens for armed groups, enabling cross-border raids and mass-casualty attacks.
The latest incident follows other deadly attacks in the wider region that have exposed persistent security gaps and strained local peace arrangements.
Humanitarian Concerns Mount
Residents in affected villages are reportedly fleeing into surrounding bush areas, fearing further attacks. Community leaders are calling for:
Permanent military presence in Borgu
Improved aerial surveillance
Rapid response mechanisms for rural communities
Security experts warn that without sustained operations, remote agrarian settlements will remain highly vulnerable.
