Residents of northern Niger State are reeling from a wave of coordinated overnight attacks after suspected Boko Haram insurgents reportedly moved from community to community, killing civilians and setting homes and businesses ablaze.
Multiple local security sources confirm that the assailants struck towns and villages across Borgu Local Government Area and Agwara Local Government Area, unleashing violence that has left dozens feared dead and many displaced.
The deadliest assault occurred in Konkoso, where at least 21 people were confirmed killed following a prolonged attack that began late at night and continued into the early hours of the morning. Survivors described scenes of panic as gunmen reportedly went door-to-door, torching houses and forcing residents to flee into surrounding bushes.
According to Gaskiya News Hausa, a security-focused Hausa-language outlet with strong local networks, the insurgents also attacked Pissa, Zango, and Tungan Makeri villages. In these communities, residents reported killings alongside widespread arson targeting homes, shops, and food stores—deepening fears of an impending humanitarian crisis.
As of the time of filing this report, Niger State authorities have yet to release an official casualty figure or detailed statement on the attacks. However, security analysts note that the assaults reflect a troubling expansion of insurgent activity beyond the North-East into parts of North-Central Nigeria, raising urgent questions about border security, intelligence coordination, and civilian protection.
National and international media outlets have increasingly reported on the spread of insurgency-related violence into Niger State and neighboring regions, underscoring growing concerns over Nigeria’s internal security landscape.
