Barcelona’s La Liga Homecoming Against Valencia Moved to 6,000-Seat Johan Cruyff Stadium
FC Barcelona’s highly anticipated La Liga home opener against Valencia CF, scheduled for Sunday, September 14, 2025, will be played at the Estadi Johan Cruyff in Sant Joan Despí. This decision comes after delays in obtaining the necessary occupancy permits for the partially renovated Spotify Camp Nou.
Permit Delays Postpone Camp Nou Return
Originally, Barcelona aimed to return to a partially reopened Camp Nou with a capacity of 27,000 spectators. However, the club failed to secure the required city permits in time, leading to the relocation of the match to the smaller Johan Cruyff Stadium. The renovation of Camp Nou is currently nine months behind schedule, making it unusable for the foreseeable future. [1]
Alternative Venues Unavailable
The Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, previously used during renovations, was considered as an alternative venue. However, recent events, including a Post Malone concert, have left the pitch in unsuitable condition for professional football matches. [1]
Historic Low Attendance Expected
With a capacity of only 6,000, the Estadi Johan Cruyff will host one of the lowest-attended matches in La Liga history. Despite the limited seating, La Liga has granted a special exemption to allow the match to proceed at this venue. [2]
Ticket Allocation and Fan Communication
Due to the reduced capacity, FC Barcelona has implemented a ticket lottery system for members who held full passes during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons at Montjuïc. The club has expressed gratitude for fans’ understanding and support during this transitional period. [3]
Looking Ahead
The club continues to work diligently to obtain the necessary permits for the reopening of the Spotify Camp Nou. The next significant deadline is October 1, when Barcelona is scheduled to host Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League. UEFA regulations stipulate that a team cannot change home stadiums during the same phase of the competition, adding urgency to the completion of the renovations. [3]
