Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The African Union (AU) has confirmed that its 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council will be held from 11 to 12 February 2026 at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting will bring together ministers of foreign affairs and other senior policymakers from across the continent to deliberate on key policy issues affecting Africa. The Executive Council, one of the AU’s principal decision-making bodies, is responsible for coordinating and making decisions on policies in areas of common interest to Member States, as well as preparing important issues for consideration by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government. According to the official announcement, the session will focus on institutional reforms, leadership appointments to AU organs and institutions, Africa’s participation in global governance structures such as the G20, and other governance matters guiding the continent’s development trajectory.
The Executive Council’s deliberations are part of a broader AU summit cycle expected to culminate in the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for 14–15 February 2026 immediately following the Council’s meeting. Ahead of the Executive Council session, the 51st Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) has been underway at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa as part of preparatory processes.
AU officials have invited media practitioners to cover key segments of the Executive Council meeting, including the official opening and closing ceremonies, as part of efforts to ensure transparency and broad engagement in reporting continental governance matters. The Executive Council meeting represents a critical stage in the African Union’s annual governance calendar, shaping policy direction on issues ranging from peace and security to integration and sustainable development under the continent’s long-term Agenda 2063 framework.
