Atiku Reiterates Support for Legal Resolution in Nnamdi Kanu’s Case!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
Former Vice President of Nigeria and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has again drawn attention to the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), saying Nigeria must not allow the rule of law to be undermined.
Though not directly endorsing activist Omoyele Sowore’s campaign for Kanu’s release, Atiku has previously indicated that, if elected president, he would respect any court ruling ordering Kanu’s release or pursue a political solution if necessary.
Background:
- During the 2023 presidential campaign, Atiku’s spokesperson affirmed that the former VP would comply with judicial rulings on Kanu’s case.
- Similarly, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara was quoted saying that Atiku had privately promised to consider releasing Kanu within his first 100 days in office if elected.
Why It Matters:
- Kanu has remained in DSS custody since his controversial arrest in 2021, despite numerous court orders for his release.
- The prolonged detention has heightened tensions in Nigeria’s South-East and sparked criticism from local and international rights organisations.
- Atiku’s past comments reflect ongoing political concern over unresolved cases tied to civil liberties, secessionist agitations, and national cohesion.
