Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asserted that the newly formed opposition coalition, operating under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy against what he describes as President Bola Tinubu’s anti-democratic tendencies.
In a recent interview, Atiku emphasized that the coalition’s primary objective is to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic system, which he believes is under serious threat. He stated, “This is not an anti-Tinubu project; it is a pro-Nigerian movement. Nigerians must be the ultimate beneficiaries of this effort” [1] .
The coalition, which includes prominent political figures such as Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. This strategic move aims to consolidate opposition efforts and present a united front against the APC’s perceived authoritarianism [2] .
Atiku has previously criticized President Tinubu’s administration for actions he deems detrimental to democratic principles. He condemned the president’s silence during the Lagos State House of Assembly crisis, interpreting it as tacit approval of anti-democratic maneuvers aimed at imposing preferred candidates against the will of the Assembly members [3] .
Despite facing criticism from groups like the Oduwa People’s Assembly, which questioned the coalition’s organizational strength and ideological clarity [4] , Atiku remains steadfast in his belief that the ADC-led alliance offers a credible alternative to the current administration.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the ADC coalition’s efforts to unite opposition forces signify a pivotal moment in the nation’s political landscape, reflecting a collective resolve to uphold democratic values and challenge the status quo
