The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun the implementation of a key welfare component of its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), announcing the rollout of a 40 per cent increase in academic allowances for university lecturers .
According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, the 40 per cent uplift in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members took effect from January 1, 2026, following the conclusion of the long-awaited renegotiated agreement between the Federal Government and the union .
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honouring its obligations under the pact, noting that some federal universities have already reflected the increased allowances in lecturers’ salary payments .
In directives issued to vice-chancellors of federal universities, the minister urged full and uniform implementation of the approved increment across all institutions and emphasized the integration of the increase into university payroll systems to ensure that all eligible academic staff benefit accordingly .
The Federal Government also underscored the need for strict compliance with the implementation framework for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), which has been captured and circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and included in the 2026 budget, to support teaching, research, and other academic activities .
Officials say the move forms part of broader efforts to boost morale, improve the academic environment, enhance research output, and promote industrial harmony within Nigeria’s university system .
The renegotiated agreement signed earlier in January by representatives of the Federal Government and ASUU ends years of impasse over the 2009 agreement and includes the 40 per cent allowance increase among other welfare and funding reforms aimed at stabilising the country’s tertiary education sector.
