Plateau State — In a decisive move to confront the recent upsurge in insecurity across Plateau, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has approved the immediate deployment of the Chief of Army Staff Intervention Battalion — a specialised special forces unit — to Plateau State. The deployment comes amid escalating banditry and violent attacks in parts of the state.
The troops, already on the ground in Plateau, are expected to play a critical role in reinforcing ongoing operations and restoring normalcy in affected communities following renewed attacks that have heightened fears among residents.
Upon their arrival at the 3 Division Headquarters in Jos, the contingent was received by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Folusho Oyinlola, also serving as the Commander of Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace. In his address, Major General Oyinlola charged the troops to remain firm, determined, and uncompromising in offensive operations designed to dismantle criminal networks and secure vulnerable areas.
Major General Oyinlola also commended the COAS for the provision of critical logistics and combat enablers necessary for the success of their mission, highlighting that these resources were vital for sustaining momentum in ongoing security operations.
In urging calm among the populace, the GOC appealed to Plateau residents to support the military by remaining vigilant and providing timely, credible intelligence that can help cripple the activities of insurgents and bandits. He emphasised that cooperation between civilians and security forces remains essential for achieving lasting peace in the state.
The deployment underscores the Army’s continued commitment under Lieutenant General Shaibu’s leadership to strengthen security and protect lives and property across Nigeria’s troubled regions — an effort that has also seen intensified troop movements and operational reforms in other theatres of insecurity.
Background Context
This deployment is part of broader efforts by the Nigerian Army to tackle rampant insecurity nationwide. Under Lieutenant General Shaibu, the Army has been adopting proactive, intelligence‑driven strategies to confront asymmetric threats such as terrorism, banditry, and insurgency across multiple zones.
