The 6th Division Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, has arrested 28 suspected oil thieves and recovered over 290,000 litres of stolen petroleum products amid operations across the Niger Delta region. [1]
According to the acting deputy director of Army public relations, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, the operations took place between October 6 and 19, 2025, covering Rivers, Abia, Delta and Bayelsa states. [2]
Highlights of the crackdown include:
- Interception of a tanker (registration: Rivers JJN 287 ZU) near Elele Alimini in Emohua LGA, Rivers State, loaded with approximately 90,000 litres of stolen petroleum products. [3]
- Seizure of wooden boats at jetty points in Okrika LGA, one of which was laden with over 33,000 litres of stolen products. [1]
- Deactivation of four illegal refining sites during the two‑week operations. [1]
Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, General Officer Commanding the 6th Division, commended the troops for their vigilance and urged sustained pressure on economic saboteurs operating in oil‑producing areas.
The Army’s statement underscores the government’s intensified efforts to secure Nigeria’s oil infrastructure, confront pipeline vandalism and illegal refining networks, and stem financial losses associated with crude‑oil theft.
