ADC Slams Tinubu’s UN Security Council Seat Push as Misplaced Amid Insecurity Woes!
Reported by Fasesan Marian opeyemi | Sele Media Africa
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s renewed bid for Nigeria to obtain a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, calling it misplaced given the mounting insecurity and hardships facing Nigerians.
What Prompted the Backlash
- At the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), President Tinubu restated that Africa deserves two permanent seats on the UN Security Council, a position he often frames as part of continental justice and representation. [1]
- The government has also renewed its push for a permanent seat during UN General Assembly activities, citing Nigeria’s population size and regional role. [2]
ADC’s Critique & Call to Prioritize Domestic Issues
- In a public statement, ADC argued that while diplomatic ambitions abroad may have appeal, they are out of touch with the realities at home—particularly the insecurity, hunger, poverty, and social breakdown afflicting many communities.
- They contended that pushing for a UN seat while banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings persist is a misplaced priority. Resources and political will should first address the nation’s internal crises.
- ADC also called on the Tinubu administration to temper international ambition with urgent domestic governance, urging that Nigerians be given first priority in policies, with attention to security, food, health, and welfare.
