ADC Criticizes Governor Abiodun Over Appointment of 1,200 Political Aides
ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized Governor Dapo Abiodun’s recent appointment of 1,200 political assistants, labeling the move as a misuse of public funds and a strategy to reward political loyalists under the guise of promoting grassroots democracy.
In a statement issued by ADC State Chairman Otunba Olufemi Soluade, the party condemned the appointments as a “colossal waste of public funds,” asserting that the initiative serves the governor’s political ambitions rather than addressing the pressing needs of Ogun State residents.
“This policy is nothing short of daylight robbery, a political smokescreen designed to serve the governor’s 2027 ambitions, not the people of Ogun State,” Soluade stated.
The ADC argued that the resources allocated for these appointments could have been better invested in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and job creation.
“This is not grassroots empowerment; it’s political tokenism. While Ogun people are tightening their belts, the government is splashing public funds on cronies. It is both insensitive and irresponsible,” Soluade added.
Governor Abiodun’s administration announced the appointments as part of efforts to deepen democratic participation and enhance civic engagement across the state’s 236 wards. According to the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the political assistants are expected to serve as liaisons between the government and local communities, articulating community needs and facilitating feedback.
The ADC, however, dismissed this rationale, urging civil society organizations, opposition parties, and concerned citizens to resist what it describes as a “brazen assault on our shared future.”
“Governance must not be reduced to a survival game for politicians. Ogun State deserves visionary leadership, not wasteful politics dressed up as inclusion,” Soluade emphasized.
As the debate continues, the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable and pledged to continue exposing policies that prioritize political expediency over genuine development.
