‘A Piece of Me Is Gone’: Ex-Liverpool Defender Andre Wisdom Reflects on Life After Stabbing
Former Liverpool and Derby County defender Andre Wisdom has opened up about the harrowing experience of being stabbed during a robbery in Liverpool in June 2020, an incident that significantly impacted his football career and personal life.
Wisdom, now 31, was attacked by four masked men in the Toxteth area of Liverpool as he left a house party. The assailants stabbed him multiple times—in the head, chest, buttock, and leg—and stole his designer watch. Despite the severity of his injuries, Wisdom managed to drive himself home and later sought medical attention. He spent several days in the hospital recovering from his wounds [1] .
Reflecting on the incident, Wisdom admitted to feelings of anger and self-blame. “Basically, I shouldn’t have been there,” he said, acknowledging that his familiarity with the area may have led him to underestimate the risks. “I was angry with myself. Angry that I wasn’t more aware to avoid that situation.”
The physical aftermath of the attack was profound. Wisdom suffered severe nerve damage, particularly on his left side, leading to chronic pain and a noticeable decline in his athletic performance. “My body just wasn’t the same,” he confessed. “I wasn’t getting the same output of power or speed.” Despite these challenges, he pushed himself to return to professional football, making 36 league appearances for Derby County in the 2020–21 season [2] .
However, the long-term effects of his injuries eventually took their toll. After a period without a club, Wisdom joined non-league side Warrington Town, where he began to rebuild his fitness and confidence. In August 2024, he signed a short-term contract with Derry City in the League of Ireland, marking his return to full-time professional football. “I’m quite proud of myself for getting back into full-time football,” he said. “The will was always there, but it felt like it wasn’t the way at times.”
Wisdom’s journey serves as a testament to resilience in the face of adversity. His story highlights the physical and emotional challenges athletes can face when dealing with traumatic events and underscores the importance of support systems in recovery and reintegration into professional sports.
