Reps Spokesman Reaffirms Commitment to Electoral Act Reform!

The House of Representatives has reiterated its steadfast commitment to advancing reforms to the Electoral Act, insisting that proposed amendments are being championed in the best interest of Nigerians to enhance the transparency, credibility, and overall integrity of elections across the country.
The reaffirmation came as the House spokesman, Akintunde Rotimi, highlighted the legislature’s determination to conclude the ongoing amendment process, which seeks to harmonise different versions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill passed by both chambers of the National Assembly. The amendments form part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rotimi explained that a Conference Committee has been set up to work closely with the Senate’s own committee to resolve key differences between the two chambers’ versions of the bill. The committee, composed of lawmakers drawn from across party lines, is tasked with ironing out disagreements and producing a harmonised version for final approval by the National Assembly.
According to internal communication signed by the Clerk to the House of Representatives, the committee’s formation underscores the House’s commitment to electoral reforms that deepen transparency and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
This development follows widespread public interest in the progress of the Electoral Act amendment process particularly on provisions related to electronic transmission of election results, which have stirred debates among lawmakers, civil society groups, and democracy advocates nationwide.
Stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organisations, have urged the National Assembly to adopt reforms that firmly entrench real-time electronic transmission of results as a statutory requirement, noting that such measures could significantly reduce opportunities for manipulation and build trust in electoral outcomes.
As the harmonisation process continues, the House of Representatives reaffirmed its resolve to see through amendments that will foster a more credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral system an outcome it says will ultimately benefit Nigerians and strengthen democratic governance.
