The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to upholding the independence of the judiciary, affirming that it will not interfere in any ongoing legal proceedings involving former Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The assurance was given by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a live interview on ARISE Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday. He stressed that all corruption allegations and related court matters involving Ganduje remain active before the courts and that the state government respects the autonomy of the judicial process.
According to the commissioner, “As far as the Nigerian legal system is concerned, you may be accused of a number of corruption allegations, but the most important thing is when you are pronounced guilty by the court of law. The corruption allegations are still before judicial processes, and we do not intend in any way to interfere in the process.”
The clarification comes amid public scrutiny following the recent defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) — the party associated with Ganduje, who also served as its National Chairman. Critics have argued that the political development could influence the status of the legal actions against the former governor.
However, the commissioner maintained that the legal process would continue independently, noting that no charges have been withdrawn and no attempt has been made by the state government to hinder judicial proceedings. He added that no court has pronounced Ganduje guilty of the allegations against him, reaffirming the administration’s respect for the rule of law.
The court cases involving Ganduje and others linked to his administration have continued to attract public attention, including allegations of bribery and corruption that have been before the judiciary for several months.
As the legal battles unfold, the Kano State Government’s position is viewed as an attempt to balance prevailing political dynamics with its constitutional obligation to preserve judicial independence.
