ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal action against Nigeria’s 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, demanding transparency and accountability for an estimated N14 trillion in fuel‑subsidy savings reportedly collected through Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements since the removal of fuel subsidies. [1]
In Freedom of Information (FOI) requests dated October 4, 2025, and signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation urged the governors and Wike to publicly disclose “the spending details of the estimated N14 trillion fuel‑subsidy savings,” including information about the locations of projects, their implementation status and completion reports, if any. Such transparency, SERAP argues, is legally and morally necessary given the significant impact of subsidy removal on ordinary Nigerians. [1]
SERAP also called on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to monitor the utilisation of the funds to prevent diversion into private hands. The organisation stressed that despite increased FAAC allocations since mid‑2023, poor and vulnerable Nigerians have not seen commensurate improvements in public services such as healthcare and education, intensifying calls for accountability. If the governors and the FCT minister fail to respond within the seven‑day timeframe cited in the FOI requests, SERAP has warned it will pursue appropriate legal action to compel compliance. [1]
