A 37‑year‑old Nigerian national, identified as Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu, has been shot dead by South African police officers during a traffic stop on the N12 highway in Klerksdorp, North West Province. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 17 December 2025, and has sparked outrage and demands for justice. [1]According to official reports, four traffic police officers, aged between 25 and 36, allegedly chased Onu while conducting operations and allegedly shot him during the pursuit. Onu’s vehicle was later found stalled in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the N12 after the shooting. [2]Local authorities confirmed that the four officers were arrested and charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice following investigations. Preliminary inquiries led detectives to trace the suspects and seize their official firearms for forensic ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing probe. [2] North West Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Ryno Naidoo welcomed the arrests and commended detectives for their swift action. The officers were denied bail when they appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court, and their next court appearance is scheduled as proceedings continue. [2]Onu was reportedly legally residing in South Africa at the time of the incident, according to police statements. The case adds to a growing list of violent deaths involving Nigerians in South Africa, raising concerns about police conduct and community safety. [1]
