42 Dead in Latest Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), declared in early September 2025, has resulted in 42 deaths out of 64 confirmed cases.

The outbreak, centered in the northeastern province of Ituri, has prompted rapid emergency response measures by Congolese health authorities in collaboration with international partners. Despite the death toll, the WHO says the risk of regional spread remains moderate, due to containment efforts.

According to WHO spokesperson Dr. Margaret Harris, “Teams have been deployed for surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness. Vaccinations are also being carried out in high-risk areas.”

The DRC has experienced more than a dozen Ebola outbreaks since the virus was first discovered near the Ebola River in 1976. The country’s weak healthcare infrastructure and security challenges in affected regions often hamper outbreak response.

The WHO has urged neighboring countries to remain vigilant and continue cross-border coordination to prevent further transmission.
