24 Million Nigerians Suffer Sight Loss, Says Prof. Uneke
LAGOS — Professor Uneke, a leading Nigerian ophthalmologist, has revealed that approximately 24 million Nigerians are affected by various degrees of sight loss, highlighting a growing public health concern in the country.
During a recent health forum, Prof. Uneke emphasized that preventable eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy remain the leading causes of vision impairment in Nigeria. He attributed the high numbers to inadequate access to eye care services, low awareness, and limited resources in rural areas.
The professor called on the government, health stakeholders, and international partners to increase investments in eye care infrastructure and promote regular eye screenings to reduce the incidence of blindness.
According to the World Health Organization, Nigeria is among countries with a high burden of visual impairment, reinforcing the urgency of addressing this health challenge.
Experts warn that without immediate interventions, the number of visually impaired Nigerians is expected to rise sharply, affecting education, productivity, and quality of life.
