2027: Northern, Southern Youths Urge Unity
By Enock Damidami | Sele Media Africa
Kaduna, Nigeria — Youth leaders and representatives from both northern and southern Nigeria have come together in a historic peace accord to call for national unity and reject divisive politics as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. The gathering, held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, saw youths sign a joint declaration under the banner “The Birthing of a New Nigeria,” pledging to work together for national cohesion, economic development, and democratic stability. [1]Peace Accord and Shared Vision The event, organised by the National Youth Alliance (NYA) at Arewa House in Kaduna, brought together youth representatives from key geo‑political zones — including the North, South‑East, South‑South, and South‑West — in a show of solidarity. Delegates emphasised that ethnic and religious differences must not be exploited to divide the nation, especially at a time when Nigeria faces economic and security challenges. [2]In a collective statement, participants pledged to “eschew ethnic and religious divisions and speak with one voice in the interest of national cohesion and democratic stability ahead of the 2027 elections.” The accord emphasises peaceful engagement, dialogue, and shared responsibility as pillars for a stable Nigeria. [1]Youth Frustration with Political Manipulation In his address, the Vice Chairman of NYA (North), Abubakar Mohammed‑General, lamented that Nigerian youths have long been manipulated by political elites for selfish political ends, leading to disunity and frustration. He urged young Nigerians to resist attempts to use them as tools for sectional or partisan conflicts. [1]“Our collective future depends on unity, peace, and inclusion. We reject anything that seeks to divide Nigerians along ethnic or religious lines,” Mohammed‑General stated. [1]Why It Matters As the 2027 elections approach, Nigeria’s youth — who make up a significant portion of the voting population — are increasingly seen as critical to shaping the nation’s political direction. By advocating unity and rejecting hate‑filled politics, this coalition of northern and southern youths aims to demonstrate a new narrative of cooperation and national purpose.
Political observers believe that such unified youth voices could help temper regional tensions and foster a political climate focused on development rather than division, particularly as candidates and parties mobilise support across the country. [2]—
