A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that its National Convention will be held on March 28 and 29, 2026, in Abuja, where a new National Working Committee (NWC) and officials for other statutory party organs will be elected.
The decision was reached during the 105th meeting of the partyโs National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Monday in Abuja, where members deliberated on the partyโs ongoing leadership crisis and internal organisational processes.
In a communique issued after the NEC meeting, party leaders reaffirmed the leadership of the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee, with Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu serving as National Secretary, describing it as the legitimate administrative organ of the party until the convention is held.
The communique further extended the tenure of the national, state, and zonal caretaker committees until after the convention and directed the immediate activation of convention sub-committees to commence logistical and consultative preparations.
Party leadership said the planned convention is necessary to resolve months of internal leadership disputes and restore stability within the opposition party.
The announcement follows a Federal High Court ruling that nullified a rival PDP national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, declaring it invalid and affirming the Abdulrahman-led caretaker committee as the recognised leadership pending a properly conducted convention.
The PDP faction has urged party stakeholders nationwide to rally behind the convention process in the interest of unity, reconciliation, and democratic renewal as the party prepares for future elections.
