At least nine people have been killed and dozens more injured after a mass shooting at a school and nearby residence in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge, in the northeastern part of British Columbia, Canada.
According to police and multiple news reports, the tragedy unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at about 1:20 p.m. local time when reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School triggered an emergency response.
Shooting Details
Six victims were found dead inside the school when officers arrived, while one person died en route to the hospital, officials said.
Two more victims were discovered dead at a nearby residence believed to be linked to the shooting incident.
The suspected shooter was also found deceased inside the school from what appears to be a self-inflicted wound, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
At least two people with serious injuries were airlifted to larger medical centres, and about 25 others were treated locally for injuries ranging from minor to severe.
The small community of roughly 2,400 residents was placed under a temporary lockdown while RCMP officers secured the scene and conducted further searches. Authorities later confirmed that there were no further suspects at large.
Official Response & Impact
Local leaders and national officials expressed profound sorrow at the loss of life. The town’s municipality released a statement acknowledging the “heartbreak” felt across the tight-knit community.
This event marks one of the deadliest shootings in British Columbia in recent years and has deeply shaken both the residents of Tumbler Ridge and Canadians nationwide.
