In a dramatic and heart-stopping moment that has captured widespread attention on social media, a Lagos mechanic, Emmanuel Enya, reportedly lost ₦125,000 after selflessly stopping to help a woman in active labour deliver her baby by the roadside.
The remarkable incident occurred on a busy bridge in Lagos, where Enya, while on his way to work, encountered a heavily pregnant woman who was clearly in distress and already in labour. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the situation drew the attention of passers-by as the woman struggled to cope with the emergency.
Viral video clips circulating on Facebook and Instagram show Enya stepping in without hesitation to assist the woman during the delivery. The footage, which has since spread widely across social media platforms, shows the mechanic helping to safely deliver the baby in the presence of several bystanders.
However, amid the crowd that gathered during the incident, Enya later discovered that ₦125,000 had gone missing from his belongings. According to accounts linked to the viral videos, the money was allegedly taken by individuals who capitalised on the chaotic situation as the roadside delivery unfolded.
Community Reaction
The incident has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many Nigerians praising Enya for his courage and humanity. Social media users have described him as a hero who prioritised saving lives over personal safety or financial concerns. Others have called on authorities and well-meaning Nigerians to support and compensate him for his loss.
Those who shared the videos on Instagram and Facebook noted that Enya’s quick response may have prevented a tragic outcome, stressing that any delay in assistance could have been fatal for both mother and child.
The Broader Issue
Beyond the individual act of kindness, the incident has renewed conversations about Nigeria’s emergency healthcare challenges, particularly in urban centres like Lagos. Experts and reports have consistently highlighted how delays in access to emergency medical services, cost barriers, and inadequate response systems continue to endanger pregnant women.
Healthcare advocates argue that strengthening emergency response mechanisms, improving maternal healthcare access, and ensuring functional referral systems remain critical to reducing Nigeria’s high maternal and infant mortality rates.
