In a significant development shaking Nigeria’s digital and political space, the Department of State Services (DSS) has formally filed a five-count charge against former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, alongside global tech giants X Corp (formerly Twitter) and Meta Inc. (owners of Facebook and Instagram).
The charges stem from alleged publications made on social media platforms deemed critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to DSS sources, the posts were considered “inciting,” “damaging to national security,” and aimed at “undermining the office of the President.”
This marks the first time the Nigerian government is dragging international social media companies to court in a direct legal confrontation over user-generated political content. Legal analysts suggest the case could set a precedent for digital expression, state power, and platform liability within the country.
