In a shocking case that has gripped both French and international headlines, ten men, including the father of the victim, have been formally charged in northern France for the alleged rape and sexual abuse of a drugged five-year-old boy during “chemsex” parties held in the city of Lille.

According to the Parquet of Lille, prosecutors opened an investigation on 15 February 2025 after authorities were alerted to the possible organisation of a chemsex event—a term used to describe sexual encounters facilitated by the use of drugs—held the night before the report was filed.

Prosecutors allege that the father of the child facilitated contact between his young son and a group of adult males at the event. The boy was reportedly administered chemical substances without his knowledge, severely impairing his ability to resist or understand what was happening.

On 22 February 2025, the Lille public prosecutor referred the case to an investigating judge for further action, with charges including rape and sexual assault involving the administration of a substance to the victim without their consent. This category of crime is particularly grave under French law and can carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, especially where torture or barbarity is involved.

Of the ten suspects, nine have been placed in pre-trial detention. One of the main suspects tragically died by suicide in custody on 21 June 2025, while awaiting trial.

The child, now under the care of his mother following separation from his father prior to the allegations, is reportedly receiving specialised support.

The case has sparked renewed debate in France and across Europe concerning the dangers of chemsex culture, particularly when it intersects with organised sexual violence and drug-facilitated crimes. Campaigners and medical professionals alike have warned about significant physical and psychological harms associated with such practices.

As investigations continue and legal proceedings move forward, authorities are under pressure to clarify the sequence of events and the exact roles played by each suspect.
